Turkey Wildlife Trafficking Assessment

Illicit wildlife seized along Turkish air routes consisted primarily of ivory (29%), pangolin (26%), reptile (18%), and rhino horn (12%) products.

Over 200 kg of ivory were seized annually along Turkish air routes from 2015 to 2017. However, fewer than 100 kg of ivory were seized in 2018, and no ivory seizures were reported along Turkish air routes in 2019. Pangolin trafficking instances along Turkish air routes have primarily consisted of large (>100 kg) shipments of scales. These include seizures of 1,450 kg in 2016, 800 kg in 2018, and 1,220 kg in 2019. Trafficking instances involving ivory and pangolin were primarily transported through air freight. Ivory and pangolin trafficking instances along Turkish air routes primarily originated from African countries (including Nigeria, Uganda, DRC, and Ghana) and were destined for Asian countries (such as Malaysia, Vietnam, China, and Laos).
