USAID BIJAK Raises Awareness of Wildlife Trafficking at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Indonesia

Mar 09, 2020

3 March 2020 - USAID BIJAK launched a two-week photo exhibit, an interactive wildlife trafficking display and two short videos on wildlife trafficking in the Terminal 3 departure hall of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta.

Airports play a key role as transit hubs for the domestic and international illegally traded species. The photo exhibit features large scale photos of protected Indonesian wildlife species that are frequently trafficked through the airports and calls to action to save #IndonesianBiodiversity and #endwildlifetrafficking. The interactive learning display features two mannequins dressed as passengers with animals concealed in their luggage and clothing to show common modus operandi of wildlife smugglers.  Informational signage explains how some of the most commonly smuggled animals are concealed, and invites the public to search through the display to find as many smuggled animals as possible. The two videos show how wildlife smugglers traffic animals through the airports, on how to identify wildlife smugglers and provide information on how to report suspicious behavior.
